Understanding Wedding Photography Styles

Planning your wedding involves many decisions, but perhaps the most qualitative of such decisions is on photographic "style".

This page introduces you to the 4 main "styles" of wedding photography, to give you a clearer picture of what you might be looking for.

#1 Bright and Airy
The light and airy style typically features a cheery bright look across an outdoor day scene, conveying warmth and bliss. While this style typically entails blown (over-bright) skies and backgrounds, Jeremy's rendition uses subtle lighting techniques to ensure the couple is well lit, while creating bluer skies and preserving backdrop vibrance.
The dramatic style is a more contextual / scene-dependent look, introducing flattering shadows that convey a hint of mystique and selectively draw the viewer's attention. Jeremy's rendition of this style typically features controlled light, creating an emotive juxtaposition between areas of light and shadow.
While this style is more frequently employed in indoor settings, Jeremy can also implement this style for outdoor day scenes in some conditions.
#2 Dramatic
This approach relies on the sun or venue for lighting, without the photographer's own supplemental lighting. This style is typically featured during ceremonies and the solemnization, or when there are venue limitations. During the day, this style produces the most "natural" look outdoors, with the caveat that a flattering "natural" look is partially dependent on the weather and cloud movement.
The option for this style is also available for portrait sessions upon request.
#3 Nightscape
#4 Ambient / Natural Light
For couples looking for that creative cherry-on-top, the night opens up exciting artistic options for your photographer to drive his photographic vision. This style typically features flattering light on the couple, vibrant nightscapes and colours that pop.
Summary
There is no inherently "correct" wedding photography style, and the choice is largely driven by the couple's preference, situation and photographer's expertise and judgement.
Photographers also have varying inclinations and abilities to execute various styles, and this may be a key consideration for couples when choosing their wedding photographer.
